I use ‘a’ when I mention something first. Also I use it when something is not specific one.
Example) Can you lend me a book?

I use ‘the’ when something is = has already been mentioned and = or is a specific things.= thing.
Example) I have a bowl. The bowl is very small./Look at the sky.
